Aren't we all a little bit Clark Kent ?
The Journey to Architect
By day, I am an Architect. I received my Bachelors of Architecture at New York Institute of Technology in 1999. Years of hard work, inspiration and dedication propel me daily. My spirit continually is driven to "create".
Give a Girl Lego's, and See Who She Becomes
Where did it start? With simple Danish word - Lego. I loved architecture at an early age. I wanted to build cities every moment I was awake. At 5, my parents inadvertently set me on my path by crushing my dream and telling me "building Lego's is not a real job. You can build real houses , that's called being an Architect". My future identity was immediately decided and I said "ok, i'll be an Architect" with certainty and determination.
(See? Just like Clark Kent , at an early age my primary persona had alter ego beginnings!)

I would help my dad fix anything around the house. I would spend hours drawing houses and be critiqued, so I could further improve my quest of Design. (Elementary school charrettes. Who knew we invented such a thing!) It was told to me, with great enthusiasm, that Bob Villa is a man I should admire and listen to. So, video tapes of This Old House became a weekly event I look forward to with my dad. He was right! There was NOTHING Bob and Norm could not do! Thru the help of local hardware stores and home improvement stores, there was nothing I could not help my dad build and fix.
The Superhero's Catalyst
Like every good story, there is a defining moment in which the protagonist faces. In true story form, the antagonist is introduced. In 1999, I graduated with my 5-year degree, a Bachelor of Architecture. I enter the adult world work force where real projects are about to come alive! Scatterings of commercial, residential, retail and restaurant work. A very unexpected sector of Architecture popped into my workload. Healthcare. A Hospital for a very prominent New York City Hospital. Little did I know how much time I was about to spend in other Hospitals.

My dad was diagnosed with Stage 3 Cancer. Like every true superhero, he enters his battle. There were many. Outside of work, I spent my personal time in hospital rooms while he recovered. I observed the doctors and nurses and how they flowed thru the ward attending to their patients. I walked the Halls of Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and was surprisingly met with comforting feelings thru the newly renovated spaces. This Fortress of Solitude for the Sick, was a welcoming place of revolutionary care. It left its presence with me. It gave me ideas on what I could do.

I am not a medical professional by trade. I could not help cure sicknesses. BUT, I could improve the spaces in which these sick scared people were treated. I could do my best to help remove their fears and soothe their anxiety by helping to invigorate other Hospitals to be Beacons of Hope and comfort to those patients. And so, my purposed became clear. Healthcare Architecture would be what I could do for others. I dived into this world knowing there was so very much to learn and concur. For 25 years, I have continued to study and design. I have the ongoing privilege to sit and speak with patients and doctor’s to get their vital feedback on how together we can improve the Healthcare Sector.

We will never be done. There is no finale, yet the drive to concur what I can is what pushes me.
